On 27 December 1919, Atatürk and the other commanders of the Turkish War of Independence came to Ankara and started planning wars and revolutions. At that time, Ankara was a small town. The city had no agricultural or industrial value. However, being in the middle of Anatolia was of strategic importance. Therefore, Ankara was an excellent choice to become a command center. After the end of the War of Independence and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey, the first Parliament was found in Ankara. Three years later, on October 13, 1923, Ankara officially became the capital.
Ankara is One of the Most Important Symbols of the Republic
Ankara has become a symbol of Turkey’s institutions. Many historical buildings from the foundation period of the Republic are located in Ankara. The First Assembly is now a museum. Atatürk’s mausoleum, also known as Anitkabir, is in Ankara. Many old buildings and museums are located in Ulus district.
Ankara is an advantageous place in terms of location. Many civilizations, including the Roman and Byzantine Empire, settled here before the War of Independence, even before the Ottoman Empire. Two empires restored Ankara Castle, known to exist during the Galatians. Therefore, Kale’s architecture represents these ancients empires. It was later conquered by the Seljuks and then restored, gained additional architectural value.
Historical and Cultural Development of Ankara
The most popular civilization settled in Ankara is the Hittites. There is a symbol in Sihhiye in the heart of Ankara that symbolizes Hittites. However, according to legends, the famous Phrygian King Midas founded Ankara. Chose the city of Ancyra, which means anchor. Then the Hittites made the city famous and named it Ankuwa. From Ulus district to Ankara Castle, it is possible to see many buildings, baths, inn houses from many ancient civilizations, and empires living and settling in Anatolia. Ankara has a very high cultural value, including in the history of Anatolia. There are numerous historical artifacts representing these civilizations in the Anatolian Civilizations Museum. Ethnographic Museum is the first museum to be built in Turkey. The citizens donated the works in the museum, and there are many artifacts from the Turkish people’s Islamic period.
Beyond its historical and cultural value, Ankara is known for its magnificent cuisine, consisting mainly of cereals and meat-containing foods. As for animals, Ankara is famous for its cats and goats. There are many parks, recreation areas, and handcrafts in the capital.
